A bespoke marble sculpture commission begins long before the stone is carved. The most successful projects define the intended location, dimensions, material, visual references and transport requirements from the beginning.
Marmura Design CG works with private clients and architectural projects requiring custom marble sculpture, fountains, fireplaces, sacred art and monumental decorative stonework. The process below explains what information helps turn an idea into a clearly defined commission.
1. Define the purpose of the piece
Start with where the sculpture will be installed and what role it should play. A focal sculpture for a hotel courtyard requires a different scale from a portrait bust for an interior. Entrance sculptures, garden figures, fountains and sacred works also have different viewing distances and installation needs.
2. Establish dimensions early
Height, width and depth affect not only the appearance of the sculpture but also stone selection, weight, packing and delivery. If the piece must coordinate with columns, gates, walls, stairs or a fountain basin, those architectural dimensions should be considered before production.
3. Select the marble and visual direction
Natural marble varies in colour, veining and visual character. White marble is a traditional choice for classical sculpture, while coloured marble can be used to create contrast or highlight selected elements. Reference images and architectural drawings help define the intended visual direction.
4. Review the project before production
For figurative or highly personalized work, the project should be clearly established before final carving. For portrait commissions, a staged process can include modelling and client review before the final execution in stone.
5. Production and finishing
Once the design, dimensions and material are agreed, production can proceed according to the complexity and scale of the commission. Monumental works require additional planning because individual components may need to be produced, packed and installed as part of a larger architectural composition.
6. Packing and international delivery
Transport is planned around the finished dimensions, weight and destination. Large marble pieces may require reinforced packing, freight transport and lifting equipment at delivery. We can discuss delivery requirements when preparing the quotation so the client understands the logistics before confirming the project.
